Abstract: This long-form journalism thesis explores the case study of CarePoint Health in Hudson County. CarePoint Health purchased three struggling community hospitals and converted them from non-profit institutions to for-profit institutions. This thesis traces the story of CarePoint Health and the communities the company serves through institutional history and personal stories. It reports on the healthcare reform underway in the New Jersey State legislature and reflects on some of the politics that influence the glacial pace of change. It is an attempt at presenting a portrait of a relatively young company and the toll its presence takes on surrounding communities.
